LA Times’ 24 Hours is reporting that Robert Rodriguez is in negotiations with new home studio 20th Century Fox to direct X-Men Origins: Wolverine spin-off, Deadpool.

According 23F:

There’s no deal yet, and the sides need to agree on a number of key points, but it’s moved beyond the casual discussion stage and into the more substantive realm of deal points.

This is exciting news, and if the deal comes off it’s a smart move for Fox – Rodriguez has proven ability to deliver high octane action on a modest budget, Deadpool as a character has great potential.

With this and Matthew Vaughn’s work on X-Men: First Class, it seems Fox is willing to put their trust in talented, individual directors.

20th Century Fox has released the full trailer for Machete, based on the fake trailer from Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s Grindhouse double bill.

Robert Rodriguez has released, via Ain’t It Cool News the first trailer for the full-length Machete movie, itself based on the fake Grindhouse trailer.

Variety reports that 20th Century Fox has set September 3rd 2010 (America’s Labor Day weekend).

Machete is of course based on the fake trailer featured in Robert Rodriguez’s and Quentin Tarantino’s Grindhouse double bill.

Deadline are reporting that 20th entury Fox have won the US rights to distribute Machete for $9 after a 6-way bidding war with other studios.

 

Perhaps more interestingly, Rodriguez’s traditional backers, the Bob and Harvey Weinstein, turned down the chance to handle the film. With Rodriguez’s own Troublemaker Studios rebooting the Predator franchise for Fox, could he have found a new creative home?

Fox reminded everyone that it was already very much in the Robert Rodriguez business making Predators, and Tom Rothman really wanted him to have a home there, and Rodriguez and Rothman get along well, so a deal was clinched

… they’re editing right now so I’m writing some score. But it’s going really terrific it looks really great

Yeah we still talk about doing that as early/later next year, but I haven’t gotten into that yet…

I know I wanna do it and its always sort of time permitting kind of thing but it’s not like I can tell you definitely we’re starting…it’s not my next picture I know that…

‘Machete’ kicks ass. [Laughs] It is a culmination of ‘Desperado’, ‘Once Upon a Time in Mexico’…there’s even a little bit of ‘From Dusk ‘Til Dawn’ in there. I think it’s gonna be one of his best. And I’m not just saying that cause I’m the lead, it’s just a great movie. I think everybody’s gonna walk away from that movie with some opinion.
